Spring is right around the corner which means it’s the perfect time to start planning out your spring garden. While annuals are beautiful and great for homeowners who want to change up their garden every year, perennials are ideal for homeowners looking for a consistent look. Here are seven best perennials for Florida that you should plant this spring.

Pentas

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance perennial plant for your garden, pentas are the way to go. The pentas plant blooms non-stop and they are practically irresistible to hummingbirds and butterflies. For best results, plant your pentas in full sun or partial shade.

Hibiscus

We love a good tropical plant! Hibiscus is a beautiful option for homeowners looking to add topical color to their home garden. This vibrant plant will bloom all year long and comes in a wide variety of colors. It is typically grown as a shrub, which can be perfect for accenting areas of your home that may feel a bit lacking in color or depth. For best results, plant your hibiscus in full sun or partial shade.

Evolvulus

Another non-stop blooming plant is Evolvulus. Evolvulus is one of the best perennials for Florida due to the fact that it’s fairly drought tolerant, meaning that once established it will rarely need watering, other than the occasional rainstorm. Evolvulus is a beautiful, true blue flower, which is incredible rare in the gardening world.  It’s perfect for bordering your garden or spilling over the sides of a potted container as it is a creeping vine like plant. Plant your evolvulus in full sun or partial shade.

Bougainvillea

If you’d like to add some color to your fence, side of your home, or even a trellis, the bougainvillea plant is the way to go. Bougainvillea is a very beautiful and vibrant colored plant that will bloom almost all year round. It requires up to 6 hours of direct sunlight, so make sure you place it in an area that will give it such. This will allow you to get the maximum bloom and color of the plant.

Gerbera

The gerbera flower is a perfect plant for gardeners looking to see more insect and animal life in their garden. Gerbera is loved by pollinators, so you should expect bees to be dropping by once you plant them. The plant comes in a wide range of colors and will usually grow from Spring until Fall. Unlike some of the other plants on this list, though, gerbera is not drought tolerant, so make sure you water your gerbera regularly.

Periwinkle

Another creeping vine plant, Periwinkle is a beautiful, perfect for ground cover plant that can be used to choke out any weeds in your garden. They thrive in partly shady areas so make sure you plant your Periwinkle near foliage or even under a bay window.

Lantana

Lastly, the lantana plant, which is one of our favorites. Lantana works as both an annual or a perennial. These very colorful flowers require a good amount of water after planting. They are perfect for attracting bees, hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden.
